Il y a plus de quatre cent cinquante ans, les catholiques massacrent les protestants dans la nuit du 24 août 1572 consacrant par cet assassinat massif l’un des points centraux dans les guerres de religion, qui ont pendant trente traversées le pays.
L’historien a publié un nombre important d’ouvrages sur le thème depuis le début des années 1990. L’ouvrage propose une mise au point historique d’abord en revenant sur ses origines, mais surtout en mettant en perspective les différentes lectures de l’événement fondateur. Il insiste sur la place de la parole qui a favorisé le crime, les actes suivent les mots et sont légitimés par le pouvoir. Il montre comment la monarchie, Charles IX et Catherine de Médicis, a décidé d’éliminer les dirigeants protestants puis comment les Parisiens catholiques ont décidé d’éliminer leur voisin considérant qu’ils devaient purifier la cité de ses éléments « impurs ». Si l’auteur insiste sur la libération de la violence par le pouvoir, il accorde à la religion dans sa pratique la plus stricte, la responsabilité morale du crime.
Il inscrit aussi ce massacre comme un signe précurseur de crime contemporain voyant dans des meurtres de masses, comme les pogromes, la poursuite de ce crime fondateur.
Cette vaste enquête interroge aussi sur les processus de soumission à l’autorité et de servitude volontaire.
