Après Flora Tristan, Brigitte Krulic se replonge dans la littérature du XIXe siècle pour offrir une biographie d’une figure majeure de la littérature, George Sand.
Aurore Dupin de Francueil devenue en raison la quasi-interdiction faite aux femmes de publier des livres, George Sand est née en 1804 à Paris et meurt en 1876. Elle est au croisement de plusieurs milieux sociaux, aristocratique par son père et commerçant modeste par sa mère. Très jeune orpheline de père, elle vit dans l’Indre dans ce qui reste jusqu’à la fin de ses jours son point d’attache à Nohant. Élevée par des amis de la famille, elle fait un mariage malheureux. Son conjoint souvent violent et humiliant. Indépendante et féministe, elle obtient la séparation quitte un temps Nohant pour Paris, où elle arrive en 1831, juste après les trois glorieuses. Elle soutient activement les révolutionnaires tout en commençant à écrire comme journaliste et surtout comme romancière. Elle revendique le droit à une vie amoureuse et le droit pour les femmes d’écrire. Ces premiers textes sont d’emblée des manifestes. Après sa rencontre avec l’un des premiers socialistes, Pierre Leroux, elle se passionne pour la question sociale comme en témoigne nombre de ses œuvres et soutien les révoltes populaires comme celle des Canuts à Lyon en 1834 et publie des ouvrages sociaux en témoignent Compagnon du tour de France ou Mauprat une utopie décrivant une société où les classes sociales ont disparu. Avant 1848, elle soutient Louis Blanc, échange avec les républicains. Elle revient à Paris peu après les journées de février soutenant l’éphémère République sociale qui vient de naître. Très vite, ils déchantent. George Sand se retire une nouvelle fois à Nohant. Le coup d’État de Louis Napoléon Bonaparte met fin à ses espoirs politiques. La fin de sa carrière est essentiellement littéraire et mondaine. Elle réprouve violemment la Commune de Paris.
Brigitte Krulic offre une synthèse aussi utile qu’agréable pour comprendre les méandres d’une pensée et d’un engagement complexes.
