Il faut saluer le travail des éditions Faber qui depuis plusieurs années remettent à disposition du public les œuvres du pédagogue Janusz Korczack. Elles rééditent aujourd’hui un ouvrage disparu, le roi des enfants.
Janucz Korczak est né Henryk Goldszmit à Varsovie le 22 juillet 1878. Suite à la maladie de son père, il est obligé d’enseigner tout en commençant à écrire ses premiers romans. Il réussit cependant à entreprendre des études de médecine tout en se passionnant pour les pédagogies dites alternatives. Devenu médecin, il se spécialise en pédiatrie. Il exerce alors une double fonction : médecin et éducateur dans un orphelinat. Sa passion pour la pédagogie émancipatrice le pousse à créer une république des enfants dans laquelle ces derniers prennent leur affaire en main. Korzcak participe du renouvellement de la pédagogie active, utilisant des méthodes aussi bien empruntées à Franscico Ferrer qu’à Célestin Freinet. Il a tenté de renouveler cette expérience dans des kibboutz avant de rentrer en Pologne, où outre son activité de médecin pédagogue, il a contribué à la prise de conscience de la spécificité de l’enfance par ces romans comme le Roi Mathias 1er, très belle fable sur le rapport entre enfance et liberté. L’auteur rappelle également son rôle de journaliste et de conteur radiophonique dans lequel il place toujours l’enfant au centre de ses préoccupations, voulant lui donner la place d’un individu autonome en construction. L’invasion de la Pologne par les nazis entraîne l’enfermement des Juifs dans le Ghetto de Varsovie. Korczak défend l’orphelinat qu’il a créé. Alors qu’il a la possibilité de fuir, il refuse d’abandonner ses élèves et est déporté et assassiné en même temps qu’eux à Treblinka le 10 août 1942. Au-delà de l’assassinat, reste une œuvre littéraire et pédagogique passionnante.
