Deux ouvrages consacrés à la photographie des lieux d’extermination viennent d’être publiés.
L’extermination des Juifs a été composée de trois phases. L’extermination par la faim dans les Ghettos, l’extermination par balles à partir de l’invasion de l’URSS en 1941 et les camps après la conférence de Wansee en 1942. Ces deux ouvrages portent sur la mémoire des lieux des assassinats de masse.
Le premier est le résultat d’un travail photographique entrepris par un jeune professionnel. Il s’est rendu sur les traces des lieux d’extermination par balles aux marges des centres urbains des villes dans les pays baltes, d’Ukraine, de Slovaquie et de Roumanie. Une grande partie de ses lieux avaient été identités après la fin de l’URSS après 1991 et plusieurs charniers mis à jour. L’auteur s’est rendu sur lieux pour photographier le silence et tenter de restituer souvent l’absence de trace. Les photographies sont sobres, souvent enneigées, silencieuses. De l’enquête photographique émergent quelques plaques du souvenir, quelques monuments discrets. Les remarquables photos sont complétées par un texte de l’historienne Annette Becker, qui s’appuie sur le Livre noir de l’extermination des Juifs et sur Vie et Destin de Vassili Grosman pour donner sens aux photographies, montrer que la violence et la mort étaient devenues banales, que les assassins mus par une idéologie étaient parfaitement conscients de leur action.
Le second a été publié à la suite d’une exposition qui s’est tenue au Mémorial de la Shoah intitulée Auschwitz-Birkenau vu par Raymond Depardon. En 1979, le photographe s’est rendu dans l’ancien complexe de la mort et a réalisé un reportage sur la mémoire du camp qui originellement a été publié dans Paris-Match et repris dans la presse du monde entier. Rappelons qu’en 1979, le complexe s’il avait été transformé en musée n’était pas le « lieu de mémoire » qu’il est aujourd’hui. La Pologne était dans le bloc communiste et les déportations présentées essentiellement comme politiques. Depardon s’y rend l’hiver, la neige et le silence renforcent l’impression terrifiante rendue par les contrastes des négatifs. Son reportage suit les traces d’un déporté. Après une vue aérienne du camp, il pénètre dans le camp et doit passer sous l’inscription le travail rend libre. Le photographe restitue l’ensemble des bâtiments. La division entre Auschwitz dont l’ensemble reste en grande partie conservé et Birkenau est saisissante, le lieu principal de mis à mort est désert aucun bâtiment ne subsiste que des traces de la rampe de sélection.
