Histoire de mémoire...
Dans ce très beau livre de souvenirs, l’historienne Élise Marienstras revient à la fois sur son parcours professionnel et sur son histoire familiale.
Commençons par son parcours d’historienne, elle appartient à la génération des historiens défricheurs. Ainsi, elle a profité de son séjour aux États-Unis dans les années 1960 pour rapporter des études toujours passionnantes sur l’histoire américaine. Elle est allée à l’encontre des sentiers battus, travaillant sur ce que l’on nomme aujourd’hui les premières nations : les Amérindiens. Elle a également ainsi apporté un regard neuf, déconstruisant les mythes fondateurs de la nation américaine comme l’illustre son livre au titre éponyme. Par ailleurs, elle a remarquablement montré, archives à l’appui, que les Indiens n’avaient pas accepté leur domestication comme en témoignent ses très beaux livres sur Wounded Knee et la résistance indienne aux États-Unis.
Mais ses mémoires ne s’arrêtent pas à la dimension universitaire. Née Élise Lichtensztejn, fille de Juifs polonais venus en France dans les années 1930, elle propose à travers son itinéraire une forme de livre du souvenir sur le Shtelt d’où est originaire sa famille, Slonim en Pologne orientale dans l’actuelle Biélorussie. La population du village ayant été assassinée par les commandos mobiles de tuerie nazis. Viennent ensuite les souvenirs de la guerre, des rafles et de la clandestinité dans l’Indre. L’expérience de la vie dans un kibboutz en 1949 puis sa rencontre avec l’historien Riszard devenu Richard pour l’état civil, la vie à l’étranger (en Tunisie puis aux États-Unis), la perception de mai 1968 vue du côté des enseignants de la Sorbonne. Enfin, la recherche mémorielle d’un peuple assassiné. Un récit touchant et passionnant.
