L’ouvrage consacré à un collectif d’artistes communistes a en quelque sorte repris et détourné les affiches et l’esprit de 68 pour en faire une entreprise de communication par l’image au service du PCF. L’historien présente le fruit d’une recherche originale et passionnante.
Trois jeunes communistes ayant participé à l’occupation des Beaux-arts en mai 1968, fortement influencés par l’école de dessin du Parti communiste polonais décident de fonder en 1972 une agence de dessin. Son nom est l’acronyme et la contraction de « crapstals » (pour crapules staliniennes) et « graphisme ».
Dans l’air du temps, ils vont s’inspirer de différents mouvements des années 1970 pour mettre leurs talents graphiques et leur imagination au service du PCF et des organisations qu’il contrôle. Très vite les affiches fleurissent ainsi parmi les premières on peut noter : « solidarité Vietnam, Laos, Cambodge. Avec l’Indochine jusqu’à la victoire finale » et « Vietnam : cinéma d’un peuple au combat » (présenté par l’association d’amitié franco-vietnamienne). Il serait cruel de s’interroger sur le fait que le collectif n’est pas réalisé d’affiche pour les boat people ou pour les Khmers victime de l’Angkar, le parti communiste cambodgien, dont les cadres ont été formés par le PCF… Même si eurocommunisme oblige les membres de Grapus soutiennent par la suite les dissidents tchèques.
Ils multiplient les projets graphiques souvent originaux pour les journaux communistes, modifiant les codes graphiques de l’intervention du PCF et de la CGT. Ils sont ainsi à l’origine du nouveau logo de la centrale. L’influence communiste déclinante, les dessinateurs se replient autour de la promotion des villes communistes d’une part et sur les lieux de culture d’autre part.
L’ouvrage propose en outre une impressionnante quantité de reproduction allant des esquisses aux affiches achevées permettant aussi de voir leur travail sous un angle qui ne soit pas exclusivement politique, même si elle n’est jamais loin.
