Il ne faut pas s’y méprendre, ce livre n’est pas une biographie stricto sensu du dictateur. Il se veut à la fois un éclairage sur la mémoire du dictateur et plus largement celle du franquisme dans la société espagnole contemporaine et par fines touches une histoire de l’Espagne. Mais l’ouvrage est aussi une analyse des scènes utilisées par le tyran pour imposer son pouvoir, mais surtout garantir la postérité de sa mémoire. L’approche est originale, il s’agit de montrer en quoi le spectre – ou pour certains l’image enchantée – du dictature continue de hanter l’Espagne. Il donne aussi à lire une histoire des transformations culturelles et mémorielles de l’Espagne et de ses résistances.
L’auteur commence par des souvenirs contrastés d’un collégien lors de ses premiers séjours en Espagne à la fin des années 1970, où il découvre que d’un lieu à l’autre peut exister une mémoire de l’oppression se juxtaposant géographiquement parlant des hommages au dictateur. L’historien a été impressionné par les traces laissées par le régime dans la société espagnole. Si globalement il est acquis que le franquisme a été une dictature sanguinaire. Le déplacement de sa dépouille le 24 octobre 2019, les lois mémorielles de 2022 et les nouveaux programmes scolaires de 2024 sur les victimes du franquisme sont symboliquement importants. Ils ne changent pas l’ombre portée, construite de son vivant par Franco sur l’Espagne et le culte que certains lui vouent. En effet, c’est de l’autre côté qu’il faut regarder pour comprendre comment le tyran a réussi à construire sa légende, qui reste dorée dans des pans entiers de la société. Il a réussi à récréer le mythe d’une unité nationale, en faisant réécrire l’histoire du pays. Il a convaincu qu’il avait été un facteur de développement et à se faire passer pour un pacificateur. Les traces des charniers n’y changent rien. Franco demeure un mythe qu’il a contribué à créer avec le sang du peuple espagnol.
