L’historien Emmanuel Droit fournit un passionnant essai sur la fin du nazisme, fondé sur des archives peu exploitées.
À la toute fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, plusieurs dirigeants nazis – militaires ou ministres (Karl Dönitz, Alfred Joldl et Albert Speer) – ont tenté de maintenir en vie l’Allemagne nazie. Réfugiés à Flensbourg dans le Nord de l’Allemagne, ils ont maintenu pendant plusieurs semaines un gouvernement fantomatique et tenté de continuer de faire vivre le IIIe Reich jusqu’à leur arrestation le 23 mai 1945 dans une semi-clandestinité. Leur objectif a été de donner l’illusion, peut-être pour se sauver eux-mêmes, de faire croire qu’ils n’avaient fait qu’obéir. Ils cherchent pendant plusieurs semaines à tenter de réhabiliter l’image de l’Allemagne. L’opération de séduction auprès des Occidentaux ne passe pas. Derrière cela Emmanuel Droit montre aussi autre chose, une partie de ces dirigeants ont permis la naissance du discours négationniste qui s’est diffusé en Allemagne depuis, inversant les réalités et présentant l’Allemagne comme une victime de la guerre.
Une passionnante reconstruction particulièrement utile pour comprendre les stratégies politiques de l’Allemagne contemporaine.
