C’est un récit touchant qu’offre André Kozovoï. Il restitue une histoire familiale où se mêlent archives et souvenirs personnels. L’auteur enfant de dissidents devenu spécialiste d’histoire soviétique restitue à la fois un cadre familial et dresse en arrière-plan une analyse fine de la réalité de l’URSS et de ce qu’a été la dissidence.
Son père Vadim Kozovoï est né en 1937 à Kharkov dans l’ancienne URSS (en Ukraine actuelle). Il appartient à l’intelligentsia juive communiste qui doit une partie de son ascension sociale à son attachement au régime. L’auteur décrit parfaitement le processus idéologico social qui a permis à la famille de gravir les échelons de l’appareil du parti état soviétique. Le jeune garçon rejoint à 17 ans Moscou pour étudier à l’Université. Là il fréquente des cercles de dissidents étudiants qui cherchent à donner sens à la déstalinisation, impulsé par Nikita Khrouchtchev. La critique du régime a des limites. Arrêté l’année suivante, il est interné pendant huit ans dans une colonie pénitentiaire de Mordovie au sud-est de Moscou. C’est là qu’il rencontre la mère d’Andrëi, Irina Emeliova, la fille de Olga Ivinskaïa, la fille de la maîtresse de Pasternak. Les deux femmes sont incorporées dans le Docteur Jivago sous une forme à peine masqué, Lara y représente l’amante du héros. Olga Ivinskaïa et sa fille sont envoyés à deux reprises dans les camps. Irina y rencontre en 1961 Vadim.
Deux ans après, Vadim est libéré. Il peut réintégrer le monde des lettres russes et entament des traductions du français vers le russe. Son succès et sa reconnaissance sont internationales, l’époque est au dégel et les échanges internationaux lui permettent d’échanger avec des poètes comme René Char ou Henri Michaux. Autorisé à se rendre en France, il choisit d’y rester. Sa compagne et Andreï n’obtiennent pas immédiatement l’autorisation de quitter le pays des soviets. Pendant quatre ans la famille vit séparée, Andreï raconte l’image d’une France adulée comparativement à la grisaille soviétique des années de pénurie. Avant que François Mitterrand n’obtienne le regroupement de la famille à Paris. Le couple retrouve alors la plénitude de son activité intellectuelle. Le récit analyse aussi le long de sa mère lors de la Perestroïka pour récupérer les récits que lui avaient confiés Pasternak, et qui avaient été confisqués par la police politique. De son côté, Andreï grandit, façonné par cet univers, et devient historien de l’URSS… pour comprendre et peut-être et surtout expliquer la tragédie soviétique…
